The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake highlighted the vulnerability of our central city. As we move through the recovery phase we have an opportunity to influence, inform, and support projects that will shape our central city.
In the wake of the earthquake we’ve made resilience a top priority. We’ve been working with building owners across the city on strengthening infrastructure and improving freshwater resilience by building new reservoirs and drilling in the harbour to find an alternative water supply.
Resilience is a key consideration in our planning. As we consider the future of Wellington we need to decide where we should focus our efforts and what a safer central city might look like.
Making the right decisions now about our city will make us better able to respond well to any future events while preserving the characteristics that make Wellington such an amazing place to live.
